Dust bin
The dust bin is the container with its filter and seals. It cracks after drops, loses the rubber gasket around the rim, and without that seal the suction goes nowhere useful.

Time to replace
Dust escapes from under the lid, the bin no longer clicks shut, the gasket has gone hard. Washing it is fine, but dry it completely — water on the fill sensor contacts does no good at all.
Versions
On mopping models the bin is often combined with the water tank. Those are not interchangeable with plain bins, so go by your model.
